Save on Groceries: Buying Bagels

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

I will be the first to admit that the bagels available for sale in the bakery (usually in bins) are tasty. They are usually soft and large in size. The only problem is their cost, as they can get pretty expensive.

If you or someone in your family enjoys having a bagel for breakfast in the morning, I recommend visiting the frozen food section. The store brand, as well as Lenders, is usually available for $1 a package or even less.

Since you may not want to give up quality for taste (at least everyday), consider mixing it up a bit. One week you can purchase bagels from the bakery and the next buy the cheaper frozen bagels.

This approach allows you to still save a little bit of money, while still being able to occasionally enjoy the products you love.

Save Money on Baby Formula

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

If you are a new parent, you may be looking for ways to save money, especially on baby formula. Breastfeeding has a number of benefits and it is free. With that said, not every new mom can or wants to take this approach.

If you are in need of baby formula, it is first important to examine the manufacturer that you use. Find the online website for that manufacturer, which is easy to do with a standard internet search. Many manufacturers, such as Nestle (for Good Start) will send you a booklet filled with moneysaving coupons. In some cases, you may get free formula too. This is an easy way to save money.

If you are able to choose between powdered formula and prepared formula, I recommend the powder. Yes, it will take a few minutes to prepare, but the savings can significantly add up overtime.

Save Money on Groceries: Packaged Sandwich Meat or Deli?

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

Do you enjoy having a cold sandwich? When buying your sandwich meat, where do you make the purchase from? What section of your grocery store do you visit?

As great as those neatly packaged sandwich meats look in the refrigerated section, you should be shopping at the deli if you want to save the most money. Most of the time, sandwich meat is cheaper there.

What it is also nice about buying sandwich meat from the deli is the choices that you should have. For example, my local grocery store has two types of turkey and three types of ham available for sale. More often than not, one is on sale.

Even though you may have to wait a few minutes to be serviced, the wait should be worth it.

Why You Should Grocery Shop with a Calculator

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

When you go grocery shopping, do you take a calculator with you? I never use to in the past. At that time, I wasn’t really concerned with my grocery bill or what the total was. Now, I am. Therefore, I always go shopping with a calculator. It is way too easy to overspend without one.

A calculator can help you stay under budget. Totaling up your order in your head can be done, but it easy to make a mistake or simply just lose count.

Whether you would just like to spend a certain amount of money, such as less than $200 or if you must, as $200 is all that you have in your bank account, a calculator should be used.

If you are looking for an affordable handheld calculator, they are available for sale in most dollar stores.

Save Money on Groceries: Watch for Fresh Produce Errors Part 2

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

In my last post, I stated the importance of watching all fresh produce rung up at the cash register. This is due in part to the lack of barcodes, as most cashiers must enter in a produce code by hand. This does leave room for error. That is why you should, at the very least, check your receipt before leaving the store.

There are, however, other steps that you can take as well.

* Make note of all produce sale prices, either in your head or on paper. This will allow you to easily catch an overcharge.

* Grab an item that has a produce code sticker on it. Most cashiers will first look for these stickers. Having it handy can reduce the chance of a mistake.

* Write down the code yourself. If your cashier looks like he or she is unsure, give them the codes that you wrote down. This can also help to save time.

Grocery Shopping: Watch For Fresh Produce Errors

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

A simple way to save money on groceries is to watch the register when checking out. Did you know that you may accidentally be charged more money? Price errors are not all that common, but they aren’t rare either.

Although you are encouraged to watch your whole order being run up, that isn’t always possible for some people, especially parents grocery shopping with children. What you will want to do is keep a close on the fresh produce. Produce is where you will find the best chance of price mistakes and errors.

Fresh produce, aside from a few items, does not come with a barcode. This means that the cashier must enter in the item by hand. Unfortunately, this does leave room for error.

Are there two types of cucumbers in the store, one being on sale and the other not? Is the cashier new and not familiar with all produce codes? There are a number of factors that can result in a price error, an error that can end up costing you money.

Save Money on Groceries: Check Your Cupboards Part 2

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

In my last post, I stated how checking your food cupboards can help you save money on groceries. It allows you to keep tabs on expiration dates and reduce food waste. With that said, there is another benefit to examining the food that you already have. That benefit is saved money at the grocery store.

Personally, I use to have a huge problem with duplicates in my cupboards. At one point, we actually had four jars of mayonnaise. Why? Because I thought that we were almost all out, but we weren’t. Yes, it will and is being used, but I could have used the money for something else at the time.

For that reason, scan your cupboards before you go grocery shopping. Make a quick mental note of the items that you already have. This will prevent you from buying food that you don’t need.

Save Money on Groceries: Check Your Cupboards

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

When it comes to saving money on groceries, one of the first things that consumers do is look for the best deals or clip coupons. Of course, these ways can help you save money, but there is another step you will want to take. That step involves examining the food that you already have inside your home.

Every couple of weeks, do you go through the cupboards in your home that holds food? If not, you may want to start doing so.

One of the benefits to doing so is the ability to examine expiration dates. In our home, it is not uncommon for some items to make their way to the back and disappear from sight. A few months ago, I ended up throwing away about $20 worth of food. This is something that you will not want to do. Move any items with upcoming expiration dates to the front, so that you will remember to prepare them.

Save Money on Groceries: Save Your Leftovers

Published by jenfoote under Uncategorized Edit This

Do you save your leftover food? Personally, I never use to in the past, but have since started doing so. Saving your leftovers is an easy way to save money on groceries. Why? Because sometimes it means that you have to buy and prepare less meals.

As nice as it is to hear that you should save your leftovers, you may be wondering exactly what you can do with them. Here is the neat part, as you have so many options.

In our home, leftover turkey or chicken usually because a sandwich for my partner’s lunch the next day.

You can also use leftovers as an ingredient for a new recipe. You can get ideas for these recipes online if you must.

You can also have a leftover night. Bring all of the leftovers from the past two or three days out from your refrigerator. Place all items on the counter or kitchen table and let your family choose what they want to eat.

Another Helpful Coupon Tip for Online Coupons

Published by jenfoote under Coupons Edit This

A few days ago, I stated how it may be a good idea to buy a second newspaper when you see good coupons inside. Did you know that you can kind of do the same thing with online coupons?

Online, you have multiple coupon websites to choose from. You are encouraged to visit them all, as you may find a few different coupons. Even so, you will find duplicate coupons on these websites. While your first thought may be to skip over them, look at the expiration date. Could you fit two shopping trips in before the coupon expired? If so, print the coupon again.

Another approach that you can take is to visit different stores. Personally, I always visit our local Wal-Mart and a local grocery store. I can use both coupons, but at different stores.
